A condition in which a stress distribution has high localized stresses.

CONT

A stress concentration is usually induced by an abrupt change in shape of a member. In the vicinity of notches, holes, changes in diameter of a shaft, or application points of concentrated loads, maximum stress is several times greater than where there is no geometrical discontinuity.

Dans un corps qui est le siège de contraintes, s'il y a une zone (de volume petit par rapport au volume total du corps) dans laquelle les contraintes possèdent des valeurs bien plus élevées que celles relevées dans le reste du corps, on dit qu'il se produit, dans cette zone, une concentration de contraintes. Ce phénomène peut être provoqué par des causes diverses telles que: singularités géométriques (entailles, trous, arêtes vives), des forces extérieures agissant sur des portions de surface très petites, de fortes variations de température localisées dans une petite zone du corps.
