Subsurface runoff includes tile drainage and natural subsurface runoff; tile drainage is percolating water intercepted by artificial drainage systems, such as tile or mole drain, which accelerate its movement into streams. In general, P [phosphorus] concentrations and losses in natural subsurface runoff are lower than in tile drainage due to the longer contact time between subsoil and natural subsurface runoff, which enhances DP removal.

En milieu agricole de plaine, l'écoulement hypodermique est récupéré par le système de drainage quand il y en a un. Ce drainage a pour effet d'accélérer l'écoulement hypodermique, mais aussi de raccourcir le temps de concentration du bassin. Dans un bassin équipé de drains, on a donc des temps de réponse plus courts et des périodes de sécheresse plus fréquentes entre les événements pluvieux.

OBS

L'écoulement de surface correspond à un transfert rapide de l'eau en surface et dans l'horizon perturbé, lors des débits de pointe d'un réseau de drainage; il est ensuite capté par la tranchée de drainage.
