Les petits animaux comme les souris et les campagnols se réfugient sous la neige pour l'hiver. Lorsque 15 à 25 centimètres de neige recouvrent le sol, créant une épaisse couverture, ces animaux creusent la neige jusqu'au niveau du sol. Dans cet abri subnival («sous la neige»), ils sont protégés contre les rudes vents d'hiver et les températures glaciales.
