Substitution drills: The substitution type requires the student to substitute a given word of the same class for a word in the sentence (noun for noun, verb for verb, etc.).

Afin de bien comprendre le mécanisme des exercices de substitution (...), nous considérons une phrase comme composée d'un certain nombre de segments, chacun situé dans une case dont la position par rapport aux autres cases est fixe. Chaque case ne peut recevoir qu'une certaine classe de segments. En substituant un segment à un autre à l'intérieur d'une même case, la structure générale de la phrase reste fixe mais son contenu sémantique change.
