Les principales impuretés gazeuses responsables de cet aérosol fin et ultrafin sont SO2, H2S, NH3 et les hydrocarbures. En fait, le responsable principal est SO2 qui conduit à des gouttelettes d'acide sulfurique et à des particules de sulfates sous l'action de trois mécanismes principaux : l'oxydation photochimique, la réaction, en présence de gouttelettes d'eau, de l'ammoniac et du SO2 et enfin l'oxydation catalytique en présence de particules de métaux lourds.
