We refer to these so-called "tickertape" beliefs as Surface Beliefs. These are the thoughts that constantly run through our heads, and that are relatively easy to identify once we turn our attention inward. Surface beliefs are often specific to the adversity that we're experiencing.

Les conséquences émotives et comportementales (C) ne sont pas uniquement causées par l'événement actif (A), mais aussi en partie par le système de croyance (B). Quand l'événement activant (A) est plaisant, les croyances qui en résultent semblent inoffensives. Mais, quand les événements activants (A) ne sont pas plaisants, les croyances irrationnelles (B) peuvent se développer chez le sujet. Ces croyances irrationnelles (B) causent souvent des difficultés émotionnelles avec des conséquences comportementales (C).
