Les appareils secondaires sont en général précédés d'un crible de scalpage afin d'éliminer des éléments fins ou humides ou pour soulager ceux-ci par by-passage de ces mêmes produits. L'interposition d'un stock tampon entre le concasseur du broyeur primaire et le broyeur secondaire permet de dissocier les cadences de travail mais également d'améliorer le rendement de l'appareil.
