Quand le sol gèle, l'eau se déplace vers les zones gelées. Elle nourrit les cristaux de glace formés entre les agrégats sous l'influence du froid. La quantité d'eau ainsi accumulée près de la surface dépend des conditions du refroidissement et de la teneur en eau initiale du sol. Mais si le dégel se produit en période pluvieuse, il se constitue alors à la surface du sol une couche boueuse dont la structure se dégrade de plus en plus. Dans les terrains humides, le foisonnement peut provoquer un exhaussement du sol assez considérable. Il n'est pas rare d'observer des cristaux de cinq à six centimètres de longueur.
