Operations: A project to extract synthetic crude oil from the Athabasca oil sands in Alta; located near Fort McMurray, construction began 1973 & came on stream July 31, 1978 at cost of $2.3 billion. Consists of one of the largest open pit mines in the world (25 km area), with capacity to prod 92 million tonnes oil sand per year.
