CONT

In the past the Attikamek system of chiefs did not exist in the form known today. The man who became chief was the one who proved best qualified to ensure his group's survival. As the Amerindians usually lived scattered throughout the forest, this role often fell upon the male head of a family if the need was felt. This leadership was based on wisdom and experience, rather than authority.

DEF
