The psychological experience that results when simulator technology works well enough to convince users that they are immersed in virtual worlds.

NASA has been developing techniques for the exploration of virtual space since the early 1980s. Their systems include control and feedback mechanisms for voice input and output, position-tracking, stereo imaging and stereo sound cueing, all through head-mounted display systems. Gesture tracking and tactile input and feedback are facilitated through digital gloves. Systems like this provide tools for interfacing with Virtual Reality environments, simulating space exploration (telepresence), industrial processes (telerobotics), and many other scientific, entertainment and educational experiences.

Dans un article publié en 1981, Marvin Minsky, fondateur du Laboratoire d'Intelligence Artificielle du MIT, évoque ce genre de perspectives techniques : Vous enfilez une veste confortable doublée de capteurs et de moteurs faisant fonction de muscles. Chaque mouvement de votre bras, de votre main et de vos doigts est reproduit en un autre lieu par des mains mécaniques mobiles. Légères, habiles et fortes, ces mains comportent leurs propres capteurs par l'intermédiaire desquels vous voyez et sentez ce qui se passe. Grâce à cet instrument, vous pouvez «travailler» dans une autre pièce, une autre ville, un autre pays, ou sur une autre planète. Votre représentant à distance a la force d'un géant ou la délicatesse d'un chirurgien. La chaleur ou la douleur sont traduites en sensation instructive mais tolérable. Votre tâche dangereuse devient sûre et agréable. Minsky appelle cette technologie la téléprésence, d'après une suggestion de Pat Gunkel, et il décrit les perfectionnements qui ont déjà été atteints.
