Son activité ne se déclenche que sur des télomères raccourcis. C'est une ribonucléoprotéine qui utilise son propre ARN comme matrice pour l'addition des séquences télomériques en 3'. L'activité de la télomérase n'est pas détectée dans les cellules normales, mais elle est activée dans les cellules cancéreuses où elle leur confère une possibilité indéfinie de multiplication.
