Venue du Mexique en décembre 1994, la crainte des financiers s'est propagée dans plusieurs pays d'Amérique latine : les fuites de capitaux se sont multipliées au Mexique, en Argentine et au Brésil, les cours en Bourse ont fortement baissé. Les banques ont subi de plein fouet l'«effet tequila», voyant leurs liquidités fortement compromises par les retraits massifs de dépôts.
