[Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars] make up the "terrestrial planets", those more or less like the earth and moon in size and in their chemistry and physics.

The terrestrial planets have smaller masses, as well as smaller sizes, compared with the Jovian planets. They also have higher densities.

Les planètes peuvent être divisées en deux groupes distincts. Les quatre plus proches du Soleil, dites planètes «telluriques», sont relativement petites, ont une densité élevée, tournent assez lentement sur elles-mêmes et possèdent peu de satellites. Les planètes lointaines, excepté Pluton, sont beaucoup plus grosses, ont une densité faible, tournent rapidement sur elles-mêmes et possèdent beaucoup de satellites.
