Quand certaines personnes distinguent à peine un saumon d'un rose ou un violet d'un bleu, d'autres détectent une centaine de millions de nuances. Une différence qui ne tient pas seulement dans l'éducation à l'art ou à la peinture, mais à une mutation génétique. Les gens atteints de tétrachromatisme possèdent 4 types de cônes dans la rétine, au lieu de trois pour le commun des mortels.

La explicación normal del tetracromatismo es que la retina del organismo contiene cuatro tipos de receptores de luz de alta intensidad con diferencias en el espectro de absorción. Esto significa que el animal puede ver longitudes de onda que están fuera del espectro visible para la visión típica del ser humano, y que puede ser capaz de distinguir coloraciones que para el ojo humano son colores idénticos.
