Scientists have proposed many ideas for how the Moon formed. A leading contender, the Giant Impact theory, speculates that when Earth was a young planet and just beginning to form, it was hit by another emerging planet named Theia, located nearby.

[...] quelques dizaines de millions d'années après la formation de la Terre, une petite planète de la taille de Mars (6.500 km de diamètre), baptisée Théia en souvenir de la divinité grecque mère d'Hélios (le Soleil) et de Séléné (la Lune), aurait heurté la Terre. L'impact se serait fait tangentiellement, arrachant une partie du manteau terrestre. La violence du choc aurait conduit à la fragmentation complète et à une vaporisation importante de ce corps céleste.
