The TPA is designed to measure the lowest energy particles and gases, providing information which is considered vital to understanding the origin and composition of Martian atmosphere. The instrument consisted of a sensor mounted at the end of a boom, and a central computer inside the spacecraft. Le TPA a été conçu pour recueillir des données sur les particules de très faible énergie ainsi que sur les gaz. Ces données devaient fournir des informations essentielles à la compréhension de la composition de l'atmosphère martienne et de son origine. L'instrument comprenait un capteur monté au bout d'un mât ainsi qu'un ordinateur à l'intérieur du satellite.
