In 1948, Thornthwaite presented a method which may be used to determine evapotranspiration from climatic data (...) the parameters used in the method are temperature and length of day, and a fixed sharing of the heat budget is assumed. Unlike the Blaney-Criddle method, however, no crop constant is introduced to the final result.

En 1948, Thornthwaite présenta une méthode qui permettait de déterminer l'évapotranspiration à partir des données climatiques (...) les paramètres employés dans la méthode sont la température et la longueur du jour et l'on assume une répartition à peu près fixe du bilan calorifique. Cependant, à la différence de la méthode de Blaney-Criddle, aucune constante de culture n'est introduite pour arriver au résultat final.
