Fleuve de l'Asie occidentale, qui draine les confins sud-orientaux de la Turquie, pays qu'il sépare sur quelques kilomètres de la Syrie, avant de traverser l'Iraq et d'aboutir au Chatt al-'Arab, embouchure commune avec l'Euphrate dans le golfe Persique; 1950 km. Le Tigre prend sa source dans le Taurus, au sud-est d'Elazig, traverse le lac Hazar, puis se dirige vers le sud-est, à travers les plateaux basaltiques et les chaînons accidentant le piémont du Taurus.
