À la fin du Paléozoïque, des glaciations gondwaniennes, couvrant jusqu'à 15 millions de kilomètres carrés d'épaisseur, auraient duré quelques dizaines de millions d'années. Ces glaciers ont laissé des moraines fossiles nommées tillites.
