A pile of rocks, much jointed and usually granitic, exposed to intense weathering, and often assuming peculiar and fantastic shapes.

e.g., the granite rocks standing as prominent masses on the moors of Devon, and Cornwall, England. Linton suggests that a tor is a residual mass of bedrock resulting from subsurface rotting through the action of acidic ground water penetrating along joint systems, followed by mechanical stripping of loose material.

A rock outcrop formed by weathering, usually found on or near the summit of a hill.

Many features in the park are typical of non-glaciated landscapes. V-shaped valleys, isolated conical hills and sideslope rock outcrops called "tors" are the most obvious ones.

OBS

In the South West of England, where the term originated, it is also a word used for the hills themselves - particularly the high points of Dartmoor in Devon and Bodmin Moor in Cornwall. The word "tor" is also used in southern Wales, particularly on the rocky coastlines such as the Vale of Glamorgan and the Gower peninsula; ... The term is notable for being, along with crag, one among a mere handful of Celtic loan-words (Cornish tor, Old Welsh twrr, Scots Gaelic tòrr).

For reception and transmission of messages or calls in the MF and HF bands [Scheveningen Radio] has 17 radiotelegraphy switchboards, 24 for radiotelephony and 7 for the modern and efficient TOR services (telex over radio); it enables ships and drilling platforms equipped with a teleprinter to correspond directly with telex subscribers on shore. The TOR equipment takes care of fast and faultless transmission by radio of telex correspondences.
