La basicité d'une huile renfermant des additifs alcalins ou alcalino-terreux est caractérisée par l'indice de base ou «Base Number (BN)», anciennement désigné «Total Base Number (TBN)». En effet, afin de neutraliser tous les produits acides formés dans les moteurs soit par oxydation de l'huile, soit par formation de produits acides dans les gaz de combustion, on incorpore dans les huiles moteurs des sels alcalino-terreux (carbonates de calcium et/ou de magnésium).
