L'administration d'estrogènes oraux et parentéraux s'accompagne d'une diminution comparable du cholesterol total et du LDL cholesterol à 6 mois, avec un effet plus rapide des estrogènes oraux (1). Les estrogènes oraux élévent aussi le HDL, cholestérol et les triglycérides. Les estrogènes cutanés ont un effet moindre sur le HDL et diminuent le taux des triglycérides. L'effet commun sur le LDL cholestérol est en rapport avec une augmentation des récepteurs des LDL améliorant la captation dite régulée de cette lipoprotéine.
