Pour les eaux dures (alcalinité élevée), le PLAT [point limite d'alcalinité totale] [est presque égal au] PRIAT [point réel d'inflexion d'alcalinité totale] mais pour les eaux douces, l'utilisation du PLAT surestime la vraie valeur de HCO3- (tampon) puisque le point d'inflexion réel est plus près de 5.0 que 4.5 (fig. 2). Il en résulte que l'utilisation des lectures d'alcalinité (PLAT), généralement employées antérieurement, surestime le pouvoir tampon réel des eaux douces.
