Dans le cas d'une éclipse totale, si on se trouve dans la bande de totalité, arrive un moment où le disque brillant du Soleil disparaît complètement derrière la Lune. C'est la totalité : pendant une période pouvant atteindre un maximum théorique de 7 minutes et 31 secondes, le ciel s'assombrit et l'horizon prend les couleurs du crépuscule. À ce moment, les planètes et les étoiles les plus brillantes apparaissent et la délicate couronne solaire se dévoile autour de la silhouette noire de la Lune.
