The next step, the quantitative dose-response analysis ..., includes determining the no-observed-adverse-effect-level (NOAEL) and/or the lowest-observed-adverse-effect-level (LOAEL) for each study and type of effect. Because of the limitations associated with the use of the NOAEL, the Agency is beginning to use an additional approach, the benchmark dose approach ... If the data are considered sufficient for risk assessment, and if reproductive toxicity occurs at the lowest toxic dose level (i.e., the critical effect), an RfD or RfC, based on adverse reproductive effects, could be derived.
