L'expression «niveau trophique» a été relevée dans le titre d'un texte où sont décrits trois types de lacs (oligotrophes, mésotrophes, eutrophes) selon leur degré d'eutrophisation. Cependant, nous n'en recommandons pas l'emploi dans ce sens car le plus souvent on l'utilise pour désigner les maillons d'une chaîne alimentaire.
