Two personalities play an important role in the tales making up the Montagnais oral literature: Carcajou the Wolverine and Tshakapesh: ... Tshakapesh is also a key figure in Montagnais mythology. Like Carcajou the Wolverine, he is actually a civilizing hero, but unlike the latter, Tshakapesh is distinguished by his essentially altruistic behaviour. He kills monsters and cannibals which threaten the Amerindians' existence. He is thought of as a protective personality who ensure the survival of the Montagnais community.

Deux personnages occupent une grande part des contes qui composent la littérature orale montagnaise. Il s'agit de Carcajou et de Tshakapesh [...] Tshakapesh est également un personnage de premier plan dans la mythologie montagnaise. Il est en fait, comme le Carcajou, un héros civilisateur mais, contrairement à ce dernier, Tshakapesh se caractérise par un comportement essentiellement altruiste. Il tue les monstres et les cannibales qui menacent l'existence des Amérindiens. Il fait figure de personnage protecteur, puisqu'il assure la survie de la communauté montagnaise.
