By definition, Type A packages contain less radioactive material than Type B packages. While Type B packages must be designed to survive accident conditions, Type A packages may release a limited amount of radioactive material or lose a limited amount of shielding in a severe accident.

"Type B package" has the meaning assigned to that term by paragraph 134 (c) of the IAEA Regulations. (Regulation cited: Packaging and Transport of Nuclear Substances Regulation which came into force on May 31, 2000.)
