ONUSAL was established on 20 May 1991 to support El Salvador's process of ending 12 years of civil war. To do so, the mission started an educational program and an information campaign on human rights. Also, ONUSAL was tasked to investigate human rights violations. Créée le 20 mai 1991, l'ONUSAL avait pour rôle d'aider à mettre fin à 12 années de guerre civile en El Salvador. Pour ce faire, la mission a mis sur pied un programme éducatif et a lancé une campagne d'information sur les droits de la personne. L'ONUSAL était chargée en outre d'enquêter sur les violations des droits de la personne.
