An uncontrolled vocabulary may be used when a system designer allows a searcher, manual indexer, or computer indexing software to use their own terminology to represent topics. System users, for example, may search using whatever terms they choose to use, without needing to refer to the list of "acceptable" controlled vocabulary terms.

Les requêtes en vocabulaire libre admettent l'utilisation d'un vocabulaire non dicté par convention. Il peut s'agir de simples mots-clés, le plus souvent des unitermes; les systèmes permettent généralement la postcoordination et un opérateur de proximité, ce qui permet au moins de simuler les multi-termes. [...] Les termes sont sélectionnés librement par l'utilisateur, selon ses besoins personnels, et sans qu'il ait à consulter un lexique préétabli. Les requêtes sont alors habituellement très proches de son besoin d'information.
