A groove melted into the base metal adjacent to the toe or root of a weld and left unfilled by weld metal. [Definition standardized by the AWS.]

The causes [of an undercut] are as follows: 1) Excessive welding current. 2) Arc voltage too high. 3) Excessive travel speed that does not allow enough filler metal to be added. 4) Erratic feeding of the welding wire. 5) Excessive weaving speed. 6) Incorrect electrode angles, especially on vertical and horizontal welds.

Méthode d'exploitation de massifs de minerai par foudroyage ou éboulement («Block caving»). Par cette méthode, on have, c'est-à-dire on entaille par-dessous («undercut») le massif du minerai et on le laisse s'effondrer de lui-même de toute sa hauteur. Cet effondrement suffit généralement à le fragmenter en petits morceaux. On applique cette méthode à des gisements volumineux dont le minerai est suffisamment ferme et consistant pour se soutenir pendant le travail de havage et, d'autre part, assez friable pour se briser en tombant.

Le havage n'est possible qu'en terrain suffisamment tendre et homogène comme le charbon, le gypse ou la potasse.
