Le traitement d'un message est ininterruptible, c'est-à-dire qu'un processus termine le traitement d'un message avant de prendre en compte le message suivant. Il y a cependant une exception : lorsqu'un message d'un type particulier, dit "message d'interruption", arrive sur le site pour un processus P, l'exécution de P est interrompue et P traite immédiatement ce "message d'interruption".
