Thinking about the city in two dimensions means a horizontal spreading of the urban mass, an estrangement of the functions and a loss of social cohesion. The urban scattering creates a waste of energy, space, and resources. The compact urban planning in three dimensions, such as the skyscraper, may offer a solution to these problems.

On parle également de mitage pour marquer le fait que ce phénomène [d'étalement urbain] est insidieux : une maison apparaît, puis une autre, puis un lotissement est construit, puis d'autres constructions. Le paysage perd ainsi progressivement son caractère rural au profit d'une coexistence de zones vertes et de zones construites comportant une faible densité de bâtiments et de services collectifs.
