Vapex (vapor extraction) is a relatively new process for the recovery of heavy oil and bitumen that involves the injection of a vaporized solvent to reduce the viscosity of the oil. The diluted oil is then allowed to drain into a production well under the influence of gravity. It is a potentially economic process that can be applied to reservoirs that are not suitable for thermal recovery method. In addition, the process has the potential to sequester greenhouse gases, and is capable of in situ upgrading of heavy oil. 3, record 1, English, - vapour%20extraction
Record number: 1, Textual support number: 2 CONT
The VAPEX process uses saturated hydrocarbon solvent vapour (ethane, propane or butane) in conjunction with horizontal wells to mobilize and recover viscous oils and bitumens from hydrocarbon deposits in which the bottom water zone (aquifer) is used to deliver the solvent vapour to the base of the reservoir. The process involves injecting a hydrocarbon solvent into the reservoir along with a displacement gas to mobilize the hydrocarbons in the reservoir and move them toward the production well. 8, record 1, English, - vapour%20extraction

In situ steam extraction. With this process, hot air and steam are injected into the ground through drillholes. Volatile organics are stripped from soil and groundwater and collected at the surface for treatment. 6, record 1, English, - vapour%20extraction

The vapour extraction process (VAPEX) is similar to SAGD [Steam Assisted gravity Drainage] in that gravity drainage is the drive mechanism and a pair of horizontal wells are used for injection and production. Instead of steam, VAPEX involves injecting solvent, which diffuses into the bitumen and results in significant viscosity reduction. 1, record 2, English, - vapour%20extraction%20process

1, record 2, French, - proc%C3%A9d%C3%A9%20d%27injection%20de%20vapeur%20de%20solvant

An interesting variation of the SAGD process is outlined by Jha et al. wherein the vapor of light hydrocarbons rather than steam is injected. The result is an efficient non-thermal vapor extraction (VAPEX) process. The diluted heavy oil then drains by gravity to the horizontal production well and in the process is substantially upgraded by the precipitation of asphaltenes. 5, record 3, English, - VAPEX%20process
