Le maintien de la volémie ou masse sanguine totale est indispensable à l’oxygénation tissulaire [...] Toute hypovolémie, qu’elle soit absolue par diminution de la masse sanguine, ou relative par diminution du retour veineux au cœur, expose au risque d’effondrement du débit cardiaque, de la pression artérielle et surtout du transport et de la délivrance tissulaire en oxygène, à l’origine d’un syndrome de défaillance multiviscérale. Différents solutés de remplissage sont à notre disposition. Ils se répartissent en deux grandes catégories, les cristalloïdes et les colloïdes.
