Le quartz filonien est le quartz commun entièrement cristallisé mais laiteux. On peut en avoir des transparents dans un filon catathermal de haute température. Les géodes que l'on y rencontre contiennent des cristaux qui peuvent être beaux, mais petits dits en dents de chien. Dans les filons de fluorine ou de barytine, le quartz peut remplacer ces minéraux, ce ne sont pas des pseudomorphoses, simplement des «moulages» des cristaux disparus. Il existe aussi des quartz filoniens à éclat gras et odeur fétide qui contiennent des inclusions de matières hydrocarbonées.
