Se llama "precarga" a la tensión pasiva en la pared ventricular al momento de iniciarse la contracción y está fundamentalmente determinada por el volumen diastólico final. Equivale a la "longitud inicial" en los estudios en fibra aislada. En situaciones fisiológicas se relaciona principalmente con el retorno venoso, observándose que a mayor precarga o retorno venoso se observa un aumento del volumen de eyección.
