Pour la première fois au monde, l'équipe du Dr Alain Carpentier (hôpital Broussais à Paris) a réussi une opération à cœur ouvert par vidéochirurgie. Après une ouverture thoracique de 4 centimètres sur 5 centimètres au lieu des 20 centimètres par 15 centimètres habituels, les chirurgiens ont réparé la valve mitrale, située entre l'oreillette et le ventricule gauche, sous le contrôle d'une microcaméra, tandis qu'une circulation extracorporelle périphérique mettait le cœur au repos.
