Ne vous méprenez pas, le Minitel n'est pas un micro-ordinateur : son «intelligence» est des plus succinctes. Il ne devient opérationnel qu'une fois mis en contact, par téléphone, avec des ordinateurs appelés «serveurs vidéotex», Serveurs, parce qu'ils délivrent à la demande les informations stockées dans leurs mémoires, et vidéotex, en référence à la norme de codage utilisée. Le système consiste à faire circuler à travers le réseau téléphonique non plus la voix, mais des textes et des images à basse définition pour les afficher sur l'écran vidéo du terminal.
