La nucléocapside de certains virus peut être entourée d'une enveloppe. Ces particules virales appartiennent au groupe des virus enveloppés. Le plus remarquable est que cette enveloppe est une membrane lipidique provenant du système membranaire de la cellule hôte[,] mais elle est incrustée de protéines virales. Les virus enveloppés quittent en fait la cellule hôte par bourgeonnement, ce qui explique la composition lipidique de leur enveloppe.
