The LDRE01 washing pit is used to wash and decontaminate major sodium impregnated large components from Phénix such as primary pumps and intermediate heat exchangers.

En exploitation normale comme en fin de vie, le sodium sous forme métallique doit être éliminé de tout composant extrait du réacteur. Même bien vidangé, il reste une épaisseur résiduelle de sodium d'au moins 30 µm sur les parois verticales et 1 mm sur les surfaces horizontales d'un composant. Chaque RNR [réacteur à neutrons rapides] dispose d'installations de lavage de ses composants. Ces installations (appelées puits de lavage) sont généralement au nombre de trois : - une pour traiter les assemblages constituant le cœur; - une pour traiter les petits composants extractibles (perches); - une pour traiter les gros composants (pompes primaires et échangeurs intermédiaires).
