La lavabilité d'une peinture se mesure conventionnellement par des essais utilisant des appareillages automatiques, dans lesquels le feuil est soumis aux déplacements répétés (va-et-vient) d'un tampon chargé, imprégné d'un produit de lavage approprié : on compte le nombre de déplacements au terme desquels le feuil a, soit retrouvé son aspect initial, soit perdu ses caractéristiques initiales.
