WATER STRESS [3 records]

Record 1 2012-10-24

English

Subject field(s)
  • Living Matter - General Properties
  • Crop Protection
  • Silviculture
DEF

Stress experienced by plants and animals when short of water.

CONT

When transpiration exceeds water absorption, the water content of leaves decreases, causing a loss of turgor and wilting. It has been shown that under water stress in less than half an hour, the leaf may begin to make and accumulate abscisic acid.

OBS

Water stress is the system of forces acting on the plant, whereas the response of the plant to these forces [should be called] water strain.

English

Subject field(s)
  • Climatology
  • Hydrology and Hydrography
DEF

Condition in which the annual availability of renewable fresh water is less than 1,667 and greater than 1,000 cubic meters per person in the population.

CONT

Water stress occurs when the demand for water exceeds the available amount during a certain period or when poor quality restricts its use. Water stress causes deterioration of fresh water resources in terms of quantity (aquifer over-exploitation, dry rivers, etc.) and quality (eutrophication, organic matter pollution, saline intrusion, etc.).

Domaine(s)
  • Climatologie
  • Hydrologie et hydrographie
CONT

Le stress hydrique se définit comme une insuffisance d'eau de qualité satisfaisante pour pouvoir répondre aux besoins humains et environnementaux.
