L'exploration de l'atmosphère en altitude, illustrée pour la première fois [...] en 1647, se poursuit grâce à l'utilisation de cerfs-volants, puis de ballons libres; c'est ainsi que le physicien Jacques Charles réalise le premier sondage météorologique en atmosphère libre le 1er décembre 1783, atteignant une altitude de 3 400 m.
