Le programme de week-end a pour but de procurer une expérience thérapeutique intensive aux personnes qui, grâce à ce soutien, seront capables de travailler ou d'aller à l'école les cinq autres jours de la semaine [...] Il se rapproche de la formule offerte par le groupe thérapeutique dit marathon (c'est-à-dire une séance continue de 24 h ou davantage et ayant lieu généralement en fin de semaine). Encore très rare, l'hôpital de week-end s'apparente à l'hôpital de nuit dans la mesure où il propose des soins intensifs pendant un laps de temps limité dans la semaine et où il offre la possibilité de poursuivre un travail ou des études.
