Weissenberg effect: An alteration of the normal sresses in a non-Newtonian fluid on account of elasticity, so that such a fluid, when placed between two concentric, rotating cylinders, can rise on the inner cylinder in spite of centrifugal forces.

Lorsqu'on établit un gradient de vitesse dans un fluide newtonien, on ne crée que des contraintes tangentielles. Dans certains fluides, et en particulier dans des composés macromoléculaires en solution ou fondus, on constate en plus l'existence de contraintes normales: c'est ce que l'on appelle «effet Weissenberg». Si le fluide est cisaillé entre deux disques, dont l'un est percé d'une ouverture centrale, le dispositif fonctionne en pompe centripète. Des extrudeuses ont été conçues sur ce principe.
