Le nom d'une entité habitée adopte le genre de son pseudo-générique, sous-entendu : «la Rome éternelle» (le nom d'une ville); «le Vieux-Montréal» (un nom de quartier). Le nom d'une ville située à l'extérieur du Canada et comprenant un article défini initial, adopte habituellement le genre de cet article : La Haye, Le Caire, La Nouvelle-Orléans. L'accord se fait cependant toujours au singulier, même si un élément du spécifique est pluriel : «(La ville de) Trois-Rivières est située sur le (fleuve) Saint-Laurent».
