Le ministère des Richesses naturelles de l'Ontario et la compagnie Domtar ont entrepris la mise en œuvre d'une méthode de gestion des écosystèmes dans la forêt de White River au nord-est du lac Supérieur. Selon ces deux organismes, une telle méthode est nécessaire pour pouvoir atteindre les objectifs de durabilité et de maintien de la biodiversité. Leur méthode consiste à modeler les perturbations d'origine humaine à des perturbations naturelles très bien simulées. Les écosystèmes et les espèces de cette partie de la forêt boréale ont évolué en fonction des perturbations naturelles ou s'y sont adaptés.
