L'Ouïgour moderne est classé avec l'ouzbek dans le groupe sud-est des langues turques. C'est le descendant direct du djaghataï. Écrit à l'origine en caractères arabes, il a adopté en ex-URSS l'alphabet latin en 1930 et le cyrillique en 1947. En Chine, l'alphabet arabe continue à être utilisé.
